Garden 2010: The Official Plant List
This has been sitting on my desk for a couple weeks now. Sorry about the delay, but the OFFICIAL PLANT LIST had to be notarized and approved by the garden regents. All that means is we had to sit down and figure out what to add and subtract.
But now it’s sitting in front of me and it’s all signed and nobody can complain about it anymore.
Without further adieu:
- Carrots
- Cantaloupe
- Corn
- Cucumbers
- Green beans
- Onions
- Peas (new addition)
- Peppers (green and red)
- Potatoes (red and Yukon gold)
- Pumpkins
- Radishes (white and red)
- Raspberries
- Strawberries
- Tomatoes (beefsteak and roma)
- Watermelon
- Zucchini
As you can see not a whole lot has changed from last year. Peas are the only new addition.
The biggest changes will come in terms of volume and timing. We plan to add more potatoes and subtract some zucchini and cucumbers, a lot of which turned into waste last season.
We’re also going to work harder in terms of timing. Last year, all our corn came basically at once. We didn’t put enough effort into processing what we picked and ended up feeding it to the cows (which I guess we’re getting back in a round about way). This spring we want to be much more careful with our timing so we have a consistent, steady yield rather than getting everything all at once.
Another thing we have to focus on is pest control. At the end of last season, as the cantaloupes and watermelons were starting to ripen, those plants became infested with pests.
The cantaloupes were decimated. I think we got one. ONE cantaloupe! This time around we’re gonna fight those bugs with a vengeance. It’s going to be fun for us. Not so much for the bugs.
