It is Chicago’s Birthday, Let Us Rejoice
It’s the birthday of Chicago, officially incorporated as a city on this day in 1837. It began as a town of 350 in 1833 and now has a population of more than 9.5 million, making it is the third largest metropolitan area in the United States, behind only New York City and Los Angeles. The city’s name is a derivative of the Native American word shikaakwa, which means “wild leek.” Its nickname — the Windy City — first appeared in a 1858 Chicago Tribune article, but was popularized as a pejorative term by those in New York and Cincinnati.
